Sixteen-year-old Nerissa Marin loves attending a Southern California high school, being with her friends, playing on the field hockey team though her strength is swimming, shopping, surfing, and recently human Lo Seavon. In other words she is a typical American teen. However, in reality Riss is atypical as she is the heir to the throne of the underwater Aquarathi's High Court.

When Ross’ father the king is murdered, she becomes the monarch and must go home to Waterfell as its queen, a position she prefers to abdicate but duty calls. A lower ruler Ehmora sees an opportunity for a coup that would place him on the throne of Waterfell. He challenges the teen for the High Court crown.

Waterfell is an engaging young adult oceanic fantasy in which Amalie Howard creates a vivid under the sea kingdom populated by a unique specie. Starring a heroine who will remind readers of Buffy (early in the movie) and containing a fun twist in spite being obvious immediately, readers will enjoy Riss’ royal adventures.
